01.22.14 - A California Highway Patrol officer shot and killed a suspect in East Oakland on Tuesday night, the agency's second fatal shooting in the city in less than 24 hours, authorities said.
The latest incident happened when an officer reported shooting a suspect near 54th and Wentworth avenues who had fled from a silver Toyota 4Runner with paper license plates about 9 p.m. The suspect died, police said.
The name of the suspect wasn’t immediately released. Details of what led up to the confrontation weren’t immediately available.
The vehicle fled from the scene with an unidentified driver and a woman inside, authorities said.
A police K-9 was accidentally shot during the incident, police said. The dog was taken to an
emergency veterinary hospital in Berkeley.
It was the second fatal shooting involving the California Highway Patrol in Oakland on Tuesday.
About 2:45 a.m., two CHP officers shot and killed Antonio Mestas, 19, of Oakland after the department said he led police on a foot chase after fleeing from a stolen BMW X5 sport utility vehicle with a loaded gun on East 15th Street, a dead-end street east of 57th Avenue.
The two shootings happened about a half-mile from each other, but there was no word whether the two incidents were related.
