Oaklanders Block Streets in Protest of Urban Shield Training Exercise

09.12.15 - Urban Shield is a yearly expo that takes place in Oakland that brings together police and law enforcement agencies from across the country to train in counter-insurgency techniques and par-ooze the latest gadgets and weapons to be used in domestic situations. Last year, in the wake of images of police riding military styled tanks in Ferguson, hundreds of people took to the streets in protest, forcing then Mayor Jean Quan to declare that Urban Shield would not be welcomed back in the city. However, as ABC 7 reported: "Urban Shield exercises will take place all over the Bay Area over a 48-hour period, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday." In the past, Urban Shield exercises have featured police taking down faux activists holding banners with anarchist symbols and "No Blood for Oil" banners. Oakland Police Let Media Watch Body-Cam Footage of Fatal Incidents, But Refuse to Publicly Release Videos

08.19.15 - This morning, the Oakland Police Department held an invite-only screening of videos for select members of the media showing recent police incidents that resulted in the deaths of two men. Although OPD allowed this small group of reporters to view the footage, the department is now claiming that the broader public doesn’t have a right to see the videos, and that copies will not be released to the public until several investigations are completed. 08.18.15 - Black August adds another hero and martyr to the roll. By some accounts, it was his first day on the yard after 46 years in solitary confinement when Hugo Pinell, affectionately known as Yogi Bear, was assassinated Aug. 12. The news sparked a victory celebration by prison guards on social media: “May he rot in hell” and “Good riddens” (sic), they typed. Yogi was the only member of the San Quentin 6 still in prison, and his role in the events of Aug. 21, 1971, the day George Jackson was assassinated, has earned the guards’ incessant enmity ever since.
