Urban Shield, SWAT, and the Domain Awareness Center

oakland-dac-2

10.24.13 - The upcoming Urban Shield government/police training exercise is run by the private corporation Cytel Group, founded by former Alameda County Assistant Sheriff James Baker. All scenarios in Urban Shield must contain “a nexus to terrorism” and are designed based on threat analysis provided by the Regional Fusion Center, an institution which has been at the center of domestic spying controversy. Partners in the 2013 exercise include every branch of the Military, FEMA, DEA, TSA, National Guard, US Secret Service, and Coast Guard, among others. While local politicians pull the wool of disaster preparedness over our eyes, Urban Shield is in reality an annual exposition of the latest techniques and technologies imported from the military industrial complex to be used against our community. Interview with Homes Not Jails!

HNJ-2biggerhalf

10.20.13 - The Homes not Jails (HNJ) San Francisco chapter was formed in 1992 in response to the reality that while there are huge numbers of homeless folks on the streets, vacant houses in the city go empty for months or years. Through covert housing takeovers, public building occupations, and direct action, HNJ aims to fulfill the basic human right to free and safe housing for all. As they case the streets for houses to put people up for the night, HNJ is influenced by slogans like ‘property is robbery’ and ‘property is violence’: “There’s people out in the streets every night that are being hurt- people that are starving, dying, getting harassed by police...how is that not violence when there are all these homes that are owned but not being used?” Read…

Beyond the Flash Points: an interview with Against Hired Guns

goldenstatewarrior

10.10.13 - The Against Hired Guns project was initiated earlier this year to provide context and analysis around information being released by a cop with the Oakland Unified School District Police looking to rat out his department in their ‘mishandling’ of the killing of Raheim Brown Jr. Those who worked on the project began organizing together during the Oscar Grant rebellions and come from a range of political tendencies. We sat down in Oscar Grant Plaza with Cat, the co-chair of Onyx Organizing Committee, and Jesse, an anti-policing organizer from Oakland, to have a candid discussion about the questions they have been grappling with and the important ideas that have come out of this project.
